You might have just located an iota of garbage that has littered the space above us. Starting with Sputnik 1 in 1957, more than 4,000 satellites have been sent to space. Since then, it has been reported that more than 70,000 objects lie spread between 850-1,000 km above the Earth. With an impact speed of around 36,000 kilometers per hour in space, it is estimated that a 1mm metal chip can match the lethality of a .22 calibre rifle (a metal of the size of a tennis ball is as fatal as 25 sticks of dynamite). A National Geographic report says that NASA regularly replaces some windows of its space shuttles (as they get damaged) by small particles in space. Space debris need not remain in space and can regularly fall on earth. The Delta rocket dropped on earth on January 22, 1997 in Georgetown. Similar incidents have happened in Saudi Arabia, Argentina & Brazil. With the Centre for Defence Information stating that space debris is increasing at the rate of 5% per annum, we might someday have a huge space debris layer instead of the ozone layer surrounding the earth. And as our lives get more dependent on satellites roaming in the infinites, damages to them by the roving bullets can’t be ruled out.

To read more on IIPM Editorial Article, please click here...,

Also visit:

IIPM Publications

Arindam Chaudhuri Initiative

Business & Economy

Source: IIPM, 4Ps, B&E

You’re fat! Fat chance!!

I was tucking into my after-dinner snack of a hamburger (ok, ok, two hamburgers) when I came across an article from the International Association of Agricultural Economist by University of North Carolina professor Barry Popkin. Yes, yes obesity is growing (even outnumbering the underweight, 1 billion to 800 million), yes, we eat unhealthily. Yawn, what else? Suddenly, my eyes were riveted to an unthinkable thought: Obese people are malnourished? What?!? I thought I had an excess of nutrients. You know, too much fat from too much food... now you’re saying I don’t have enough? Make up your mind! Am I a ‘tubby whale’ or am I a starving sack of lard-n-bones? You can’t possibly dump all the negatives of the world on me & make me both! After much fuming, I got back to the screen to read the possible justifications. Obese people typically survive on a diet of fatty foods like pizzas, burgers and oodles of butter (I guiltily put away the remains of my burger), filling us up with ‘empty calories’ and very few nutrients.

For complete IIPM Research & Being one of the oldest and largest banks the world over, it followed to reason that SBI inadvertently ended up losing touch with ‘generation next’. So how did the story end? Did SBI even try to bridge the virtually insurmountable gen-gap? The novel answer to this customary conundrum was as simple as it was brilliant, and enough to position them in this list of innovative corporations – and that was, conjure a campaign that doesn’t carp on the drudgery that banks normally evoke, and use the important ‘f’ word liberally... fun! In fact, Mediaedge:cia (SBI’s agency) have had their labour of love nominated for Best Media Innovation. SBI have also looked to give back to society as much as they get from it, best understood from their announcement of the SBI Social Card, a first-of-its-kind affinity card featuring 4 NGOs as beneficiaries on a single credit card. Another distinction notched up by this great grandfather of the Indian banking system is that it has the largest number of branches of any bank in India, a feat accomplished less by innovation and more by adopting a factory approach to its establishment and employing an assembly-line process to facilitate the rapid migration of branches. As the (once) plodding giant gets set, it surely seeks to gain a decisive edge over its rivals, and the most impressive tactical tool they have is also the oldest available to the corporate world: advertising!

For complete IIPM Editorial Article, please click here...

Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

Source: IIPM Publication

George Bush & 200 nautical miles

Bush will not, can not, and shall not leave even water...

Sci-fi?? Imagination?? Or an inevitable reality. Increasing population, depleting land resources and technological advances in marine resource exploitation are making hydrosphere the potential conflict zones of the future. The UNCLOS (United Nation Convention On The Law of The Sea) defines EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zones), which allows the exploitation of natural resources of coastal nations upto 200 nautical miles from shore, beyond which the High Seas are declared as the Heritage to Humanity. However, non acceptance of this treaty, notably by the United States, adds on to the potentially volatile mixtures of competition, nationalism and militarisation & portends disaster for the future. Though much of the marine resource are speculative, for many countries the potential is worth several times their annual GNPs. So the competition for their control and use is bound to greatly intensify from the viewpoint of the coastal states involved. What we urgently need is an analysis of the myriad policies that presently govern the use of contested regions, and a clear guideline that forces countries like US to fall in line.

For more on IIPM Publication Article, click here...

Source: (Business& Economy), IIPM; Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

IIPM Publication: GE Market Potential

Que: With stronger capabilities in place in sales and marketing, you can then start to connect the dots across the company. Isn’t that the idea behind your push for more enterprise selling, where one salesperson can represent the company’s entire range of offerings to a customer?

Ans: We’ve always done enterprise selling on an ad hoc basis, but we want to go beyond the convenient cross-selling opportunities and think more systematically about the kinds of customers that can benefit from our broad portfolio. If somebody’s building a hospital, that might represent a total package of $1 billion, of which the GE market potential might be $100 million. We’re probably already talking to the C-suite because we sell the medical equipment. What we need to do is set things up so that the medical rep can bring in the lighting rep, the turbine rep and so on. The focus here is on four or five vertical industries and a couple of big events like the Olympics. Enterprise selling is only maybe ten percent of the company’s sales. But our market share is probably twice as high when we can combine things in that way.

For more on IIPM Publication Article, click here...

Source: Business& Economy, IIPM , Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

Sun ‘Feast’ing on ITC biscuits (IIPM Publication)

India’s FMCG major ITC is planning to set up a biscuit manufacturing unit in Haridwar, Uttaranchal.
